In modern era, criminal justice and technologies are rapidly advancing. Some may argue that trends of globalization increase crime. Do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, globalization is one of the biggest phenomenon of the world and it has a big influence in justice. Through globalization people all around the world become connected to each other in all aspects of life, economically, culturally, technically, politically. As the world becomes more closely, crimes become easier to commit. However, technology and criminal justice are rapidly advancing. A lot of systems are invented in order to prevent the increment of crime. As a result, there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of globalization.

Firstly, crimes have always existed but there was no developed criminal justice to investigate those crimes. Trends of globalization brought the opportunity to investigate and to deny people who commit crimes. The evolution of technology directly affects the way the criminal justice system operates at fundamental levels. A wide range of technologies are employed in support of the justice system, including telephony, database management software, computers, automobiles, and weapons (Thomas Holt,2014). The adoption and implementation of technology also directly shape the policies and practices of the justice system. For example, the development of modern communications and transportation technologies, in the early 1900s, increased the response capability of police and changed citizen calls for service. Computers and cellphone technologies have increased the capacity of data processing, information sharing, and communications within and across agencies.

Secondly, robots, GPS systems, high-powered computer systems, GDS system, ALPR cameras have improved investigation, surveillance, and analysis procedures. One of the most important technological tools in the field today is the computer database. There are now database systems for DNA testing and profiling, fingerprints and “hot spot” crime mapping programs (Jennifer Doleac,2016) . A few decades ago, everything was written down in files and information was difficult to exchange between different countries and states. Now it’s universally accessible thanks to computer databases. For example, fingerprinting is much more advanced than it was ten or twenty years ago. There are image enhancement systems to make prints clearer; there are biometric tools that more efficiently analyze fingerprints, and there are portable tools that allow officers to take prints in the field.

Furthermore, officers use GPS in so many ways, from getting to a scene using the most effective route to pinpointing where a suspect is located. Gunshot detection system (GDS) is installed in high-crime areas and helps police quickly detect where any gunshots come from. Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) is now camera inside of police cars that can automatically run every single license plate the camera sees. An officer immediately sees if the car is stolen or if the driver has warrants out for his or her arrest.

An another system which helps the criminal justice in Albania is the Total Information Management System(TIMS). It is a computer system linking all border entry points, police stations, prosecutors-essentially all of Albanian’s law enforcement community. It is a very important and effective system in Albania. For example it was a valuable proof when the court was investigating the case of one of the ministers of Albania, Sajmir Tahiri (Besim Hajdarmataj ,prosecutor,2017).

On the other hand, as the world is changing and advancing with technology, criminal organizations are taking advantage of new opportunities. The advancement of travel, ease of communication, and an increase in demand, have all contributed to the globalization of crime. Every nation has been affected by the globalization of crime and the problem continues to grow. The UNODC analyses a range of key transnational crime threats, including human trafficking, migrant smuggling, the illicit heroin and cocaine trades, cybercrime, maritime piracy and trafficking in environmental resources, firearms and counterfeit goods (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime). The internet has facilitated the widespread growth of fraud. In many developing nations, especially African, no restrictions exist to combat fraudulent activities.

In conclusion, regardless of the disadvantages of the globalization, it is a key point to the prevention of crime. To my opinion, criminal justice and technologies have discouraged criminals to commit crimes. Thus, technology and globalization play a pivotal role in the justice system.
