Tobacco, mainly in the form of cigarettes, is one of the most widely-used drugs in the world. Over a billion adults legally smoke tobacco every day. The long term health costs are high – for smokers themselves, and for the wider community in terms of health care costs and lost productivity.

Do governments have a legitimate role to legislate to protect citizens from the harmful effects of their decisions to smoke, or are such decisions up to the individual?

These days, smoking cigarettes and tobacco, have become major issue the entire world is facing. Among various consequences, health and decreasing productivity are the biggest concern the world is worried about. Government must take strong precautionary measure to refrain smokers from smoking cigarettes. However, it can be argued that the decision must be left to the individual. I personally feel that government must educate people to lesson this issue along with some harsh decision.

Its government’s duty to provide basic facilities to society, the most crucial is health care. According to world health organization – WHO, nearly two lakh peoples, every year becomes victim of lung cancer due to smoking. Most of the people are not financially capable to take medical treatment in private hospital and they rely on government to seek better medical aide. It creates additional burden on any countries financial budget, as it takes lot of money to create infrastructure to provide medical facilities. Other major concern of the government is decreasing productivity of the work force. Due to increasing work load or change in life style, many youngsters and adults are getting attracted towards this slow poison. They spend substantial time in smoking, which contributes nothing to the society except creating health issues.

Many people argues that, it’s must be up to their choice as they are paying money to buy it and aware of the consequences occurs from it. According to some people, smoking helps them to reduce their stress and make them relax to wok. Furthermore, many people are earning their bread and butter from tobacco and cigarette manufacturing and saling business. Moreover, government get taxes from it which can be utilize in countries development.

As per my opinion, government must put restrictions on sale of cigarettes to save young generation getting addicted from it. Moreover, people must get educated to cope up with stress so that they should refrain themselves from smoking or other drugs consumption.

In conclusion, it’s government’s duty to curb smoking by imposing strict measure to protect society from getting victim of such life taking activities. Moreover, people must educated to refrain themselves from cigarettes and tobacco.
