Overall, it is clear that there are two types of areas, with and without a stopbank, are prone to flooding with two different ways of protection.

In the area with a stopbank, the stopbank is a small mound of land built near the river to prevent the river the river from busting its bank. It is considered a flood defense which is higher than the 100-year flood level. Moreover, houses are built on short stilts to prevent flooding from raining. There is also a floodgate under the stopbank to let the water the internal ponding out when it is full.

Houses in without stopbank areas are built on high stilts. The stilt height is measured carefully to make sure that it is 300 mm higher than the 100-year flood or ponding level. This type of measurement is called freeboard.
