It is clear that the number in all three countries has an increased trend. While the proportion in Sweden and the USA shows a steadily rise during a century, Japan has a dramatic jump in the end of the period.
In 1940, the proportion of the population aged 65 and over in the USA was the largest (9%), while the percentage in Sweden and Japan were about 7% and 5% respectively. In the year 1960, the percentage in the USA and Sweden had a gradual rise, whereas the proportion in Japan bottomed out approximately 3%.
By 2040, the percentage of people aged 65 and over in Japan will peak at about 27% which is the largest among three countries. Meanwhile, the number in Sweden will be approximately 25% which is 2% more than that in the USA.
