TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

The reading material points out several reasons why four-day workweek is beneficial to the economy and the companies and employees. However, the lecture are against the idea of the reading material by refuting every point it raises.

To begin with, the reading material believes that this new workweek can increase the profits of the companies because the employees will become more alert and make less mistake. However, the professor argues that the company profits will probably not increase. For one thing, the money spent on employees' health profits does not change with the new workweek. For another, hiring more people will definitely increase the costs because more office space and equipment like computers will be needed, thus cutting the profits.

In addition, the reading passage claims that the four-day workweek will make the rate of unemployment decrease because some of the work will be shifted to other people. The lecture, however, poses that the rate of unemployment will not decrease. Because the process of hiring new employees are costly, the company may tend to make present employees overwork instead of hiring new people. Besides, the company may also raises their expectations of people who work four days a week and wants them to what they used to do in five days. So no new jobs will be created and the present employees will become unpleasant.

Furthermore, the reading passage says that the new workweek will improve the living quality of the employees because they will have more time to stay with their family and do what they are interested in. The professor, on the contrary, believes that the phenomenon will not take place because the stability of their jobs will decrease and they may be easier to lose their jobs. If they don't overwork. Besides, their chances of getting promoted will be tiny if they don't work five days a week because the company wants five-day worker to be in the management position to ensure consistence of continuous supervision during the entire week.
