In the modern world, we still value artists such as painters, writers and musicians.
What can arts tell us about life what science cannot?
In today’s world, artists in different disciplines such as music, literature and painting are still highly valued. This is because the way arts interpret the physical world is so relatable to normal people that science might not be comparable with.
Apparently, scientific advancements enable humans to qualify and quantify physical materials accurately, allowing us to determine which material is suitable for a specific purpose. Such feat is achieved through the use of different logical processes such as observation, note-taking, hypothesizing and finally assessing. Therefore, scientific explanations of a phenomenon often involve complex charts, calculations and technical jargons which are not readily decipherable to the general public, rendering sciences generally popular among people with a scientific background. In contrast, those preferring explanations in layman’s terms tend to opt for less “arcane” sources.
For the aforementioned reason, artists play a vital role in providing a more straightforward and captivating perspectives on life issues. For example, through a means of painting, Van Gogh has provided common viewers a profound insight, open to interpretation, into the world of human psyche and their sufferings in a vivid manner that hardly could any psychology research match. Moreover, in terms of prediction, many fiction novels, such as twenty thousand leagues under seas, have suggested new avenues for scientific studies in a mesmerizing way like a movie that also detailed struggles in a science adventure. It is also of note that music can concisely inform us of a community’s ethos, their thinking and their beliefs in a few minutes while it must take much longer for a science presentation to do so.
In conclusion, although sciences help humans gain an in-depth understanding of the natural world, it is arts that helps us express ourself in understandable and colorful ways that are often devoid in science papers. However, I argue that there is a mutual relationship between arts and science that should be maintained to help us obtain the possibly deepest view of the world.
