Many universities now offer online classes as an alternative to classes on campus. Is this a positive or negative development?
An increasing number of online courses are offered by universities to alternate conventional on-campus classes. Although the quality of some courses still poses certain concern, this approach is positive on the whole as it significantly benefits both students and universities.
Opponents of this modern learning method are often skeptical of its quality. It is argued that online learning is not effective as learners can easily be distracted by the surrounding environment including the presence of family members, and notifications from social networking apps. Additionally, unexpected factors such as internet disconnection or power outage can interrupt their lessons, losing some important information, and knowledge. Moreover, close supervision with online exams is almost impossible. Due to increasingly more complex cheating cases, academic results may not be ensured, resulting in low quality of outputs that are not as promised by universities.
Nonetheless, the benefits brought on by online university programmes are important. Firstly, conventional classes require students to commute to the campus, costing considerable amounts of their time and money. Online classes, on the other hand, can be conveniently taken from everywhere using computers with internet connection. Secondly, universities can financially benefit from online offerings. It is obvious that computer-based teaching requires less facilities and tends to attract more students from different areas. Online classes do not require equipment such as tables and chairs and services including cleaning and maintenance, saving a large amount of the school budget. What is more, they can reach an unlimited number of learners, resulting in increased revenue and profits.
In conclusion, while learner outputs may not be completely guaranteed in some courses, online learning classes financially benefit both learners and universities. Therefore, it is a positive development overall.
