Both the reading and the lecture discuss whether an European silver coin found at America is a genuine historical evidence. The passage present three reasons contending the coin is a fake. Yet, the professor disagrees with the reasons. Instead, she provides three counterclaims accordingly.
To begin with, the reading suggests that the distance between the settlement of the Norse and where the coin was found and is too far, so the coin could not be the real one. However, the professor refutes the statement by arguing that the Norse traveled a great distance within North America, and brought the coin with them. In addition, besides the coin, other objects were found in sites as well. Hence, the first reason is not convincing.
In the second place, the scholar brings up the view that it is true there are no other coins have been found, but the fact does not mean the coin is a fake. She further explains that the Norse did not create permanent settlements, so it was highly possible that the Norse took the coins back with them when they packaged for their return voyage. That could explain why there are no other coins found.
Last but not least, the speaker severely opposes the third reason by stating that the coin could be use in ways which are not similar to what I think today. For instance, the Norse could use the coin for trading. To be more specific, as long as the native American found the coin beautiful and interesting and wanted the coin, like using it to make a necklace, the Norse could use the coin to trade things with native American people.
