"Questioning authority. Only by questioning accepted wisdom can we advance our understanding of the world"
People do learn more by asking questions. Learning is a combined process of asking questions, reading, and researching. Hence, to increase our knowledge on any matter, by merely asking questions is not a good approach.
Most of them in today's world go to colleges to increase our knowledge about a particular field or various fields. A person will understand more if he/she will study about the subject, do some research, understand what is going on. While doing this, certainly that person will have some questions which he will not be able to find the answer for. At this stage, that person will ask questions and deepens his understanding about the subject.
There are so many facts about the world, scientists, philosophers, historians and many more have done so many researches and this day we call them as facts. These facts are the results of the researches that these people have done. But, it is not necessary that all these facts should be readily accepted without questioning them. But, before questioning those facts, we need to read thoroughly and understand the subject. if we find something which is specious then we can question and learn more about those.
Questioning is a method of learning. When we question, it ,means that we are willing to learn more about the concept. By asking questions, we will have discussions, and/or arguments, during which we will be able to explore more facts. Consider for example, when two students are solving same math problem, both of them will solve the problem in different way and believe that their method is the only way to solved efficiently. When both of them will compare their steps, both will have a discussion as to whose method was the most accurate and efficient one. During this time of the process, both will question each others work and definitely will learn more about the way solving problem differently.
In the statement, it is stated that only by questioning we can increase our understanding of the world. Only by questioning, may not be a proper method. As explained above, if to advance our understanding we need to read, do quiet a bit of research, understand what's going on, only then we can learn more.
But, this doesn't mean that, we shouldn't question at all. Even without reading or doing any research, if we hear or listen to something, if we think it is suspicious, then we need to question. Simply accepting and agreeing to everything without even having a second thought about it, we will never advance our understanding. The best way to learn is to read, research and to ask questions. If we will not be able to do the reading and researching, then we should ask questions if we cannot follow or don't agree with whatever the speaker is saying.
Hence asking questions and reading is the best way to advance our knowledge about the facts.
