In the lecture, the professor deems that all of the three theories in the passage have serious weaknesses.
First and foremost, it is true that there are many free-swimming predators, but most of them have very large eyes and excellent vision ability to spot the preys. However, the agbistids only have tiny poorly developed eyes which are almost blind in water. So, if they were able to prey on other animals, there must be other sensory organs in their body that assist them. But it turns out that no such evidence was found from the fossil, meaning that agbistids were not necessarily free-swimming predators.
Moreover, seafloor dwellers usurally can't move fast and stay at the same location. Therefor, seafloor dwellers only occupy a small area where they orginate. However, agbistids could be found in mutiple sites and spread over a large ditance, meaning that thay could move fast and can spread a large distance, which is highly unusual for seafloor dewllers. So the seafloor dwellers theory can't hold water.
Last but not the least, parasites that stay within the hosts' body usually don't have large number, because too many parasites could kill off the hosts. Neverrtheless, evidence from the fossil presents that the agbistids are in a vast amout. There were so many individuals at one site that the possibility of agbistids being parasites is actually ruled out.
Based on the aforementioned analysis, the professor argues against all of the three theories.
