The chart illustrates the proportion of England and Wales families living in owned and rented house from 1918 and 2011.

Overal, households renting accomodation overwhelmed the number over the half of the period; however, during the
rest period, households owning houses dominated the number.

Households in rented houses started at nearly 80 percent in 1918 before decreasing to around 70 percent in 1939 and
then remained stable till 1953. From that, the percentage stably went down approximately 10 percent each 10 years to
about 30 percent in 1991 and then kept unchanged till 2011 before starting to slightly rise around 5 percent in 2011.

On the other hand, households in owned accomodation stood at a lower point around 23 percent in 1918. After that, the
percentage rose 10 percent in the next 21 years and then stayed unchanged untill 1953. From 1953 to 1991, there was the
10-percent stable climb in the number of households each 10 years to nearly 70 percent and then was an insignificant rise
in 2001. Over the last 10 years period, the number slightly went down to approximately 65 percent.

Finally, households owning and renting houses from 1918 to 2011 were two opposite trends. They met each other in 1971
when the two ratios were both at 50 percent.
