Both the reading and the lecture discuss the decline of sea otters. The author of the reading believes that pollution is the main cause of reduction the population of this mammal. However, the lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He says that from the investigation, the numbers of sea otters have killed due to their predators.
First of all, the article points out that there are many chemical industries along the coat of Alaskan. These factories waste their chemical substances that harm sea otters. This point is challenged by the lecture. He says that the idea of pollution is weaken, in fact nobody have seen any dead body of the sea otters on the sea. However, it is more convincing that the sea otters were killed by their predators and their bodies were eaten right away.
Secondly, the article contends that the rate of seals and sea lions also decline along the Alaskan. The lecture rebuts this argument that orcas prefer hunting whales. However, since the whales disappeared because of people, the Orcas had to feed themselves by seals and lions.
Finally, the article states that only the sea otters in Alaskan decline, the population of these mammals in other places have no change. The lecture on the other hand, opposes this reason. He refutes that because orcas are big, they could only kill the sea otters in the places that are suitable for their size. In contrast, the orcas cannot reach to shallow or rocky locations. That is why, these places the rate of the sea otters did not decline.
