The passage and the lecture both discuss whether or not the discovered fossil structures in Arizona were created by bees as early as 200 million years ago. The reading claims that those fossil structures do not created by bees inside 200 million years ago and provides three supports for holding that opinion. However, the lecture finds all ideas dubious and provides some evidences to repudiate them all.
The reading states that no fossil remnants have been found that date to 200 million years ago and the earliest preserved fossil is only half as old as the fossil structures discovered in Arizona. In contrast, the speaker casts doubt on this claim by stating that it is true that no fossil records are available for bees to that date, but the reason is that for preserving fossil structures of bees, some trees should produce specific resins in order to preserve fossils. However, in 200 million years ago, there was not any tree that be able to produce some resins. Accordingly, it is not reasonable to assume that bees did not live in 200 million years ago because of unavailability of fossil records.
Furthermore, the reading passage argues that in 200 million years ago any flowering plant did not exist, so bees could not be existed in that date because bees are depend on flowers biologically. On the other hand, the lecture brings up the fact that bees existed before creation of flowering plant, and in that date bees adapted to feed on other plants such as Foe and pine trees rather than flowering plant.
Finally, the reading asserts that fossilized structures found in Arizona lack some important details of bees' nest such as caps, so the fossilized structures are related to other insects. Conversely, the professor dismisses the opinion pointing the fact that some chemical experiments reveal that those fossils have some specific chemical substances that produce by bees and have water proofing feature played the role of chambers, which is according to substances produced by modern bees. Therefore, the fossils structures thoroughly represent some details of bees' nests such as chambers.
