TPO-18 - Integrated Writing Task In the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya wi
The reading and the lecture are both about the Torreya taxifoha, it is a type of evergreen tree that is typically seen in Florida. The author of the reading believes that this type of tree is becoming extinct, thus, scientist are coming up of ways to solve the issue. However, the lecturer cast doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that the first solution to this problem is to replant the trees where it is originally first found. It is mentioned that they were planted in a microclimate environment, which is much cooler and wetter which is favorable for their growth. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that reestablishing it with the same location will not work, due to the in global warming. Furthermore, He argues that Florida today is different compared to previous years, hence, due to global warming the environment is becoming dryer and droughts can be seen in wetlands and survival of the trees are becoming unlikely.
Secondly, the author contends that possible option is to relocate the entire species of Torreya to different locations. The article notes that it is successfully planted in much further north, In addition scientist believed that in assisted migration people are helping torreya to come back to the environment which is suitable for living. Nevertheless, the author rebuts this argument. He suggests that assisted migration is unpredictable to the environment, thus, additional studies must be used to be certain of its exact nature.
Finally, the author states that the trees should be in research center. The article establishes that it is better for seeds and saplings to be move in an environment where it is closely monitored and studied. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that population of tress can acquire diseases in a confined space such as laboratory. Moreover, He puts forth the idea that these species need large space to grow, also, they are not programmed to brush of disease for long period of time.
