Wone with the Wind
The film Gone with the Wind has caused a lot of controversy, as portraited in the reading, because of allegations of racism. Nevertheless, it opened the doors of Hollywood for new generations of african american actors to come.
The lecturer explains how the film does not intent to be racist and that this statements are overstated. The film is set to explain how life was lived before the Civil War, in order to introduce the idea of American social conditions being better afterwards, not only with the abolition of slaves but also with womans rights.
One of the main characters is Prissy, which was represented by Butterfly McQueen. He delivered an outstanding performance, being rebellious and hysterical. He was discontent from obeing, which is clearly shown on the film.
Also, altought Mammy is not given a name in the script, this character was very complex and rich. It portraits an african as being passionate and protective of their love ones. The actress won in fact the first academy award for an african american for its performance.
In conclusion, viewers should appreciate what the film represents and how it helped new sets of black actors to come.
