The passage and the lecture are both about the zebra mussels. The author of the article states that the zebra mussels were occupying some parts of North America which were not stoppable and provides three reasons for support. However, the lecturer says that there are many effective ways of stopping zebra mussels from spreading and refutes each of the author's points.
First, the article claims that zebra mussels are traveled to the east coast of North America because of ships that were used by humans to carry cargo form Sothern Europe, where these zebra mussels are attached to the bottom of the ships. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this point by saying that if humans empty the water in the ship and refill the ship with ocean water then the zebra mussels will die because of the salt water.
Second, the text conveys that the zebra mussels do not have predators in their new habitat so that they can dominate this place. Nevertheless, the lecturer opposes this point by saying that there are some birds in the new habitat which switch to eat these mussels rather than eating their food. Hence, there is a no dominance of these species.
Third, the article posits that the fish population would be decreased because of the zebra mussels in their habitats which competes for the same food. However, the professor says that fish eats the Zebra mussels which eat them at the bottom which gives them a lot of nutrients and the bottom fish starts growing. Therefore, there is no chance of the reduction in fish population.
