The author of the reading talks about the perils of the glass for birds. The author believes that because birds often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when try to fly through glass windows. The passage, provides several solutions that responsible businesses can use to prevent injuries to birds. The professor, on the other hand, is somehow skeptical about the effectiveness of these solutions and he raises several doubts on each point made by the author.
In the first place, the reading proposes a solution through which we can replace the regular, clear glass with one-way glass that is transparent in only one direction. Contrary to what is argued by the author, the professor contends that this glass can act as bad as non-reflective glasses. He believes that birds see this glass like a mirror and since they do not understand mirrors, what they see is sky and trees. It is obvious that they will fly through it and damage themselves.
Another solution offered by the author is that to paint lines or other designs on regular window glass. What the article tries to suggest is designs of thin stripes painted on the glass. The professor strictly disputes this point by saying that this solution also has a serious problem, since the glass in this case has largely not-painted areas, birds consider these areas as open holes that they can fly through them. A solution for this problem offered by professor is to paint the larger areas of the glass, so there will remain only tiny holes. The only problem is the glass will let a little light to pass into the house and therefore there would be dim inside.
In the end, the reading passage talks about imposing magnetic fields as a last resort. The author states that bird research has shown that birds have a natural ability to sense Earth's magnetic field, and it helps birds navigate in the right direction when they fly, thus, an imposing magnetic field in the building can avoid birds from colliding with the windows. The professor rejects the last point by stating that this ability of birds works for long distances not for short distances.
