Both the reading and the listening offer opposing views on the authentication of the painting that is whether the girl in potrait is Jane Austin or not. While the passage mentions that the girl in potrait is Jane Austin, the lecturer repudiates it by providing some facts.
First, the article posits that the Austen's family gave the permission to endorse that it is Jane's potrait. The professor refutes this by saying that the potrait authorized by the extended family 70 years after the death of Austen. The family has not seen her alive and thus, cannot authenticate the potrait.
Second, the passage claims that the girl in potrait resembles to the sketch made by Jane's sister Cassandra. The speaker contends this by saying that Jane's family is very large. There are many children in the family. The potrait may belong to any children and there are some evidence that potrait belongs to one of the distant cousin of the Jane.
Third, the reading mentions that the painting is made by the professional Ozias Humphrey. Moreover, he was active in the late 1780's and early 1790's, the exact time when Jane was of the age as girl painted in the potrait. On the other hand, the professor says that the canvas of the painting has some stamp on the back which belongs to the person's shop . The person's shop was opened when Jane was around 27 years old. Therefore, Jane was older than the girl in the potrait.
Clearly, the disparity exists between the passage and the lecturer, but, the speaker provides more legitimate and tangible factors. Thus, the reading fails to justify its point towards him.
