Both the lecture and the reading are about sea otter which is a small mammal in the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. The reading claims that the decreased with otters’ population is from pollution. The lecturer thinks that the cause of reduced number of otter in ecosystem is from the predators.
To begin with, the reading points out that the industrial chemical pollution along the Alaska coast affects to otters’ death. However, in the lecture, he said that eating the otters right after the predators hunt them is the cause of declining number of otters.
Secondly, the author of reading believes that pollution which affects the entire ecosystem makes the declining number of otters. But, the tutor remarked that hunted huge sea mammals can change the target to hunt by only small mammals are available.
Finally, according to the lecture, the pattern of otter decline numbers in some Alaskan location can prove the pollution hypothesis by showing the uneven concentrations of populations of otters. Differently with the passage, the lecture thinks that it depends on predators distribution such as orca. The strong concentration of otters was the area that the orca can’t approach.
