Rembrandt

Essay topics:

Rembrandt

According to the lecture, the painting "Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet" is actually painted by Rembrandt. The speaker in the lecture gives the following points to prove the case.

First, the speaker says that the fur collar that the woman is wearing was not the part of the original painting and was added later on. So, this disproves the passage that the white linen cap which the servants wear and the luxurious fur collar coat in the painting cannot be the work of Rembrandt.

Second, the speaker mentions that since the fur collar was later added to the coat so it perfectly matches with the light pattern on the face of the woman in the original painting by Rembrandt. The coat that Rembrandt painted was of light color and so it reflected the light and that illuminated the face. As a result, Rembrandt did not make an error but he fitted the elements of light and shadow perfectly as per his style.

Third, the speaker states that the initial painting was made on a wood panel and there were no other pieces of wood glued together. However, later on pieces of wood were added and glued to the initial wooden panel in order to make extra room to paint the fur collar.

Further, the speaker mentions that the wood panel used for this painting was taken from the same tree that Rembrandt used for the wood panel for his other painting. So, it proves that this painting was also painted by Rembrandt.

Therefore, according to the speaker the above points prove that Rembrandt was the original painter. So, this painting is now added in his official catalog.
