The reading and the lecture are both about ecocertification which is given to wood companies that meet high ecological standards. The author of the reading believes that wood companies in the United States will not put an effort to receive ecocertification and provides three reasons of support. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that American wood companies will eventually want to receive ecocertification for their product.
First, the author points out that American customers are exposed to so much advertising, and they become immune to these advertises. Thus, they do not pay any attention. These points are challenged by the lecturer. He says that American people do not think that all advertise are the same. Furthermore, he argues that American people do trust independent agencies.
Second, the author contends that ecocertified products will be more expensive. The article notes that customers motivated by the price tag, and they prefer the cheaper product. The lecturer refutes this argument by saying that customers do care about the price tag, only when the competing product’s price is much higher or lower than the other.
Third, the author states that there is no need to keep up with the rest of the world for American companies, because American wood businesses sell majority of their products in the United States. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that American wood companies should focus on development of the rest of the world. Otherwise, foreign companies will steal their market in home, in United States, eventually.
