According to the lecture, the idea of a four-day workweek is not efficient and beneficial for the company as well the employee. The author of the passage, however, disagrees with this belief. Instead, he/she believes that it will not only improve the economy of the company but also the company and the employee's productivity as a whole.
First, the passage claims that employees who choose to work four days a week will have more free time, which improves their quality of life and hence they feel more rested and makes less costly errors in their works. This concept is refuted by the lecturer who asserts that employees who work four days a week are more likely to have less job stability which will ultimately reduce their quality of life. Also, the lecturer suggests that these employees lose their job first during economic turndown and have less chance of advancement in their position as the company would rather advance the employees who are more committed and work five days a week.
Another key point the passage states is that the company makes more profit as they have to pay 80% of the normal wage to their employers who want to work a four-day week and they can hire more employees to accomplish same work and pay wage. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this idea and suggests that hiring new employees will add additional cost for the training of employees, office space and medical benefits. Also, they have to bear the same cost of health benefit for both four-day a week employees and five-days a week employee. Evidently, the lecturer thinks this will not profit the company and increase the additional cost only.
In conclusion, the lecturer and the author appear to be in disagreement about the idea of a four-day week policy for the employees in a company.
