According to a recent report from our marketing department, during the past year, fewer people attended Super Screen-produced movies than in any other year. And yet the percentage of positive reviews by movie reviewers about specific Super Screen movies actually increased during the past year. Clearly, the contents of these reviews are not reaching enough of our prospective viewers. Thus, the problem lies not with the quality of our movies but with the public's lack of awareness that movies of good quality are available. Super Screen should therefore allocate a greater share of its budget next year to reaching the public through advertising.
The argument states that to attract more customers, the Super Screen production company should allocate a larger share of its budget for advertising, is an erroneous one. Because to arrive at that conclusion, the following questions have to be answered: What that ambiguous word "fewer" mean precisely?, What the word "greater" mean?, How accurate is that report from the marketing department?.
Firstly, the word "fewer" looks vague, this argument hadn't mention the percentage of decrease in number of people attending the theater. what if the number was decreased by only one last year. Although if the decrease in number of attendants was considerable, this decrease might be due to other reasons like weather or an outbreak of disease. Hence, by looking only at last years numbers, the company should not decide to allocate a greater share of its budget for advertising because this may result in severe losses.
Secondly, like the word "fewer", another word "Greater" also looks ambiguous. And the argument hadn't mentioned how much percentage it wants to allocate for advertising. Even if the decrease in number of attendants stemmed from the public's lack of awareness that good quality movies are available, if the company allocated the capital more than needed then, this action also may results in losses and its bankruptcy unfortunately.
Thirdly, the report from the marketing department might be not accurate because of some mistakes, which do happen sometimes. The company should check the report first, then only it should take those decisions. Without checking the report's correctness, it is futile to take those decisions as this takes the toll on the company.
As there is no information about the decrease in the number of attendants, about the percentage of share it wants to allocate for advertising, about the correctness of the report from marketing department is present in the argument, this argument's conclusion is a foolhardy one. This argument could be strengthened if the above questions had answers in the argument,
