The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station.
“Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station’s coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level.”
Write a response in which you: discuss what specific evidence would needed in order to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
We should consider that late-night news has it's own viewers and TV stations should respect their viewer taste about programs. So if complaints received that they are more interested in weather and local news they should respect that.
However we do not know if this complaints are from various number of viewers or from one or two of them which are interested in weather or local news whom sent numerous complaints.
Another assumption that has been made in this argument is that local companies cancel their contracts with TV station because of less viewers at late-night but this assumption is rife with unproven facts and this cancellations may have another reason which not mentioned.
In addition TV advertisements will result in loosing viewers and this possibility didn't discussed.
Examining all various angles and factors involved with adding local and weather news to late-night news does not warranty increasing in number of viewers while it is possible that viewer increase will result more advertisement contracts.
