The lecture and the reading are both about some measures to protect Torreya trees that are native to Florida. The lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the article and three supporting details to support the claim.
First of all, the lecturer says it is unlikely for Torreya trees to grow in micro climate as the author of the reading believes. That is because the temperature around the microclimate is not suitable for these trees as the area is affected by global warming. This leads to more wet lands dried out. As a result, these trees will unlikely will survive in that microclimate.
Secondly, the speaker contradicts the statement in the article regarding assisted migration. She points out another example of a plant called black locust which was migrated by human had negative impact on the plants that grew there. As such case, by introducing new plant to an entirely new location will lead to unpredicted environment.
Last but not least, the lecturer refutes the claim that Torrey trees to be protected in the research centres. She argues that, by doing so, the tree will lose its resistant capability to disease and capacity to survive in long term. This is because, relatively large and genetically varied wild trees have more diverse trees and resistant to diseases which is not the case in the trees that is kept inside.
