Dear Ms. Smith,
I am writing to send you my best wishes in your upcoming retirement!
I recently ran across my high school friend, Lisa Smith, whom I haven’t seen for many years. She informed me that you would be retiring in May after 40 years of teaching at our high school.
I want you to know how much your teaching impacted me. As you may remember, I struggled in mathematics before I took your class. To be honest, I remember dreading your class on the first day. However, your enthusiasm for the subject matter made me excited as well. I know you saw me struggling sometimes, but you were always encouraging and you helped me learn from my mistakes.
By the end of that school year, I felt confident about math and, to my own surprise, I even enjoyed it! I ended up studying social science in college and graduate school. I regularly rely on statistics to do the work I love. I believe, without your amazing class, I may have never entered this field because I would have been too afraid to do the math.
Thank you for you are the enduring impact you’ve had on my life.
Sincerely,
Jane Smith
