First, the passage mentions that the salinity of lake could be reduced if salt is removed from the water by the means of special desalination equipment. The lecturer argues that though this method would in fact decrease the salt level, it would pose certain health risks. If the water is distilled, it would leave out certain chemicals besides the salt. Some of which are noxious, such as Selenium. If the wind scatters this element and people breathe it, it would be dangerous to their health. Thus, it is safe to say that this method is impractical due to it potential dangers.
As for the second solution, the passage suggests that by constructing pipelines and canals, less salty water from the ocean can be mixed with the lake water, hence, reducing its salinity. According to the lecturer, this solution would likely work; But the government might not have the resources to build such infrastructure. The shore is 100 kilometers away and constructing such lengthy canals and pipelines is really expensive. Therefore, this method is also unrealistic because of its high cost.
At last, the article states that the lake could be divided into several parts; In the main section, salt level would be controlled by directing freshwater from revers into it, and in the smaller sections salinity would be allowed to go up. The professor, argues that this method is not durable. It might work for a short period of time, but because of the high geological actions in that area, something, for example an earthquake might occur and disrupt the walls. Consequently, water from different sections would mix again. Therefore, this method is not pragmatic either since the walls would eventually diminish.
In Closing, the professor refutes the practicality of each of the solutions mentioned in the passage by providing reasonable argument in their opposition.
