TOEFL TPO 09 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading states that Fuel-cell engines have several advantages over internal-combustion engine and will probably soon replace them and provides it with three reasons. The professor says the statement that reading made is correct, but it is too optimistic about hydrogen.
First, the reading states that internal-combustion engines are reliable on petroleum, which is a finite resource. On the contrary, hydrogen cannot be easily depleted. The professor opposes the statement by saying that despite the reading believes that hydrogen can be derived from plenty of resources, it is not easily available. Hydrogen fuel is made up from pure liquid hydrogen, which is artificial and very difficult to produce. She also explains that it needs a high technology to store the hydrogen in a very cold situation because it will only survive in such a climate.
Second, the reading claims that hydrogen will solve the pollution problems caused by petroleum fuels and internal-combustion engines. The professor does not agree with this claim, she says the fuel-cell engine solely will not pollute the air. However, the purification procedure requires burning oils and coals. Manufacturing hydrogen is done by factories. Therefore, these factories pollute the air by burning oils and coals. Conclusively, hydrogen fuels are directly polluting the air.
Finally, the reading states that fuel-cell engines will soon be economically competitive because people will spend less money to operate a fuel-cell engine than they will to operate an internal-combustion engine. The professor refutes this point by saying that fuel-cell engines require platinum to work, otherwise the engines will not ignite and start. Notwithstanding, platinum is expensive. Moreover, the scientists were not prosperous in finding another material save for platinum to reduce the price of the fuel-cell engines. Therefore, they will be more expensive than internal-combustion engines and cars.
