The article and the lecture are about glass which has presented a serious problem for wild birds because they cannot distinguish when they are flying, and therefore they crash through windows used as a material for building. The author in the passage believes that there are some methods that can solve this issue. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the statements made by the author. She thinks that these techniques would not stop this problem.
First, the author claims that the use of clear glass with one-way glass which means that is transparent in only one direction can be a great solution because birds may react to this new material and also it may not affect people, they will see out. Nevertheless, this idea is challenged by the lecturer who posits that it may bring about another issue. By doing this, this new material will reflect images of the sky like a mirror. Consequently, wild birds will be confused and will fly through buildings which imply this method as bad as the initial problem.
Second, the article states that a second method is to paint colorful lines or designs in the window, so birds can avoid trying to fly through the glass. Nonetheless, the lecturer discredits this idea by explaining that it can bring about other problems. Furthermore, she points out that birds may consider these designs as open-holes and may tend to fly through them.
Finally, the author mentions that creating an artificial instrument for generating a magnetic field is another solution because most of the birds use it as a migration pattern. The lecturer, on the other hand, puts forth the idea that this implementation will no be successful at all. Since birds just use this pattern for traveling long distances, it may not resemble this issue because most of the affected birds travel from one side of the city to the other one. Besides, during this migration birds use other signs as migration pattern.
