TPO 38- In 1995 a microscopic fungus called Phytophthora ramorum, or P. ramorum, was first detected in the forests of the western United States. P. ramorum infects trees and causes particularly serious damage in oak trees: in many infected oaks, leaves wither rapidly, large cracks appear in the bark, and the trees die. A spread of P. ramorum represents a serious threat to the forests in the western states. Several methods of protecting the forests have been proposed.
The reading and lecture are both about Phytophthora ramorum it is first seen in western United States, which infects trees and poses threats to oak tress. The author in the passage believes that the method of preservation of trees from P. ramorum has advantages. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that the techniques have serious limitation, ineffective and impractical uses.
First of all, the author points out that spread of the spores can easily managed through the help of the humans. The article notes that individual can prevent the spores by spreading by having shoes to be cleaned before going into hike and installing bike scrubbers on trail and this way is very effective and cheap. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that human involvement will not eradicate the problem. Furthermore, she argues that the spores were not spreading because of humans, but rather it is because of the water stream and rain fall transferring the spores with them and they carry it on long distances.
Secondly, the author contends that fungicidal are effective in protecting the oak tress. The article establishes that the fungicidal help the oak tress combat the infection of P. ramorum. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that this method is impractical due to the chemical need to be directly injected to the tree and this technique needs to be repeated every time. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that it only work in small group of trees and in forest where many oak trees are present this way will not work because the chemical application need to be re applied every few months. In addition, it is expensive and time consuming.
Finally, the author states that combating P. ramorum will be possible by clear cutting. The article denotes that clearing the diseased vegetation and healthy oaks this approach will prevent the spread of the spores. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that this technique will destroy the healthy vegetation that are not affected by P. ramorum. She puts forth the idea that in western United States a rare species of trees live and they don't grow immediately and by using this technique the whole ecosystem will be damaged.
