TPO- 42 Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when they try to fly through glass windows There are, however, several solutions that responsible businesses can use to prevent injuries to birds.

The reading and lecture are both about glass posing threats to birds. The author of the reading believes that there are solutions for businesses to prevent injuries to birds. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article, saying that the solutions are not effective in stopping the birds from getting harmed.

First if all, the author points out that one way glass will fix the problem. The article notes that the glass is transparent to one direction and bird will know that the glass is a solid barrier and will not fly through it. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that the outside of the glass reflects like a mirror and birds don't understand the function of the mirror. Furthermore, she argues that when they see reflection from sky or tree the birds fly into it.

Secondly, the author contends that one probable solution is painting lines and design on glass. The article establishes people can see through the glass without paint on it and birds notice lines and design on glass and will avoid going through it. On the contrary, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that when birds perceives an open hole to a glass, they try to get pass through it. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that the paint needs to be extremely small, so the bird can avoid flying through the window but the room will become extremely dark.

Finally, the author states that magnetic field helps the birds to fly away from buildings. The article denotes that birds has the capability to sense earth's magnetic field and they can navigate to the right direction. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that birds use there magnetic field for long distance. For example when they migrate from cold environment to warm location. She puts forth the idea that birds don't use the magnetic field for short travel. In addition, birds use their eye sight for light and brightness, so magnetic signals in buildings don't have effect for short distance.
