The first pie chart depicts the structure of the energy consumption in an average household in Australia. The second pie chart represents the greenhouse gas emissions as a consequence of this energy usage.
Overall, heating of the living space and water is responsible for the most significant amount of the energy used in a household in Australia. However, greenhouse gases emissions are not allocated in the same way as the energy consumption, and some less energy-demanding uses are more harmful to the environment.
The closer look at the first chart shows that the heating, whether of the house or the water, is responsible for over 70% of the total household energy usage. Other appliances use 15% of the energy, while refrigeration, lighting and cooling spend 7%, 4% and 2% of the total energy, respectively.
Water heating is the most responsible for the greenhouse gases emissions with 32% of all the gases created by a household in Australia. Other appliances, produce 28% of the greenhouse gases, although their contribution to the total energy consumption is two times smaller. Refrigeration is a large pollutant compared to its energy consumption, generating 14% of hazardous gases. Heating, on the other hand, is rather clean, causing only 15% of the greenhouse gases emissions. Cooling and lighting create 11% combined, which is almost two times more compared to their share in the energy consumption.
