TPO13 Q1 Integrated TOEFL Writing
The article discussing a fascinating topic pertaining disadvantages of buying fossils to private collectors and provide three reasons of support, however, the professor explains that the negative attitudes that expressed in the article are somewhat exaggerated and opposes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading passage discusses that if private collectors sell the fossils, public people lose the chance to view this worthy objects, and suggests that the fossils must be donated to the museum that everyone can visit them. In contrast, the professor provides information that this idea isn’t true. He states that when a collector wants to sell the fossils, they have to display the fossils to public people in order to sell them, as a result, many people exposure to the fossils. Clearly, a disparity exists between the article and the evidence exhibited by a professor.
Second, the article pushes forth the idea that selling fossil to private collector brings about that the scientist loses access to important resources of fossils. They also miss out doing some researches about extinct life forms. However, the classroom discussion contends that this point is not real. According to the professor, before fossils sell to a collector, the values of them must be identified by scientific ways and the scientists carry out examination and test on them. Therefore, the fossils pass through hands researchers first. Consequently, we can argue that indeed the claim made in reading unsubstantiated.
Finally, the article mentions that the scientist will miss important evidence related to these fossils because of the private buyers untrained. However, the professor refutes this notion by saying many fossils could not be discovered. In addition, many institutions could not have many fossils without these private owners. So, it is much better for institutions and scientists to get more fossils through these buyers otherwise many fossils will be hidden.
