Dowsing
The reading and the lecture are both about a dowsing. The author of the reading believes that this ancient art is an effective way of finding hidden objects. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. First of all, the author suggests that dowsers are somehow able to feel the energy of the flowing underground streams vibrating through the rod at certain frequencies. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She says that such forces are unknown for the science and stand against the physics law. Furthermore, she argues that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. She explains that even the most sensitive instruments are unable to detect the forces, which may be given off by various objects easily. Secondly, the writer contends that dowsing’s popularity increases in other areas, as a treasure hunt or an oil search. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that according to researches the dowsing simply does not work. The lecturer believes that it is completely based on luck and the probability of a dowser locating the underground water or a normal person is same. Finally, in the light of absence of any substantial evidence regarding how dowsing can be used to locate underground water, the claim remains a mystery.
