The bar chart illustrates the changes in two types of accommodation which are owned and rented houses in England and Wales during a period of 93 years between 1918 and 201.
Overall, it is clear that there was a contrast between the trends of the two figures surveyed. The proportion of households in owned accommodation increased significantly while that of the another saw a gradual decline. Units are measured in percentages.
In 1918, the percentage of families living in rented houses was nearly 80%, approximately 60% higher than the figure for owned accommodation. Then, the former dropped slowly to around 60% in 1961 before standing at 50% together with the latter in 1971.
During the last 40 years, the proportion for people living in owned houses witnessed an upward trend of around 20% in 2001, then it saw a slight reduction of approximately 5% in the end. Meanwhile, the percentage of households in owned accommodation decreased sharply by nearly 20% in 2001 before rising to just around 35% in 2011.
