Overall, there was a downward trend on the area of forests in almost every religions in the world. Meanwhile, europe saw a significant increase in its forest area.
In 1990, europe has the largest area of forests in the world with 989 million of hectares, compared to 946 million in south America. While there was a notable rise in the number of forests in europe, reaching 1001 million in 2005, south American forests shrank by 64 million from 1990 to 2005.
Oceania constantly stood at the bottom of the rank, with 199 million hectares of forests in 1990. The figure then dropped marginally to 197 million in the year of 2005. In contrast, the area of forests in Asia fluctuated slightly, reducing by 6 million from 1990 to 2000 and then growing to 580 million in 2005.
