The bar chart compares the proportion of households that lived in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales in 1918 and 2011.
Between 1918 and 1971, renting accommodation was more commonly then owning accommodation. The biggest gap occurred in 1918 when 78% of household lived in rented accommodation, compared 23% in owned accommodation. The proportion of tenants decreased to 68% in 1939 and remained the same in 1953. It kept a downward tendency and in 1971, the percentage of households in rented accommodation (50%) was the same as the in owned accommodation.
However, with this downward tendency, after 1971, there were more families that owned their dwellings than rented and it increased continuously until 1991, at 68%. This highest point fixed in time of 1991 and 2001. In 2011, the percentage of households owning accommodation dropped slightly to 65%.
Overall, more families in England and Wales owned their dwellings over years, while fewer family rented.
