Overall, the number of people in Japan increased constantly from 2005 and then dropped significantly from 2005 to 2055. The percentage of old people climbed with the fast rate from 1950 to 2055.
The population in Japan started with only 84.1 millions people in the year 1950. From 1950 to 1985, each year, the population climbed up with nearly 5 to 6 millions people and peaked the total of 1921 million in 1985. From 1985 to 2010, the population is still increased but with smaller trend than in previous period, 1-2 millions each year. In those 50 last years, the number of people decreased significantly and reached 89.9 million in the last year-2055.
Over the decade, the number of old people in Japan increased with the fast trend, began with 4.1 millions in 1950, reached 37.2 millions in 2035, which are accounted for 4.9% and 20.0% respectively among the total population. This trend followed a small decrease with 0.7 million from 2035 to 2055 but the contribution to the total remains increasing from 34.0% to 41.0% ( from 2035 to 2055 respectively)
