The reading and the lecture are both ways of decreasing tha salinity of the Salton Sea located in California caused by the fast evaporation of the lake's water. whereas the reading states that there are several ways to reverse the problem of the increasing salinity because of the fast evaporation of water, the lecturer casts doubt about the points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
firstly, the reading suggests the direct removal of salt from the lake's water in special facilities by pumping the water into the facilities and heating it. as a result the water will evaporate leaving the salt behind. the lecturer disputes this point. She stats that the desalination sounds as a great solution. However some of the solid materials left behind can be very harmful. some chimicals that can be spread with the wind are highly risky and makes the air that people breath toxic.
Secondly, the reading says that by adding ocean water to the lake's water would bring the lake's salinity down. Since the ocean's water is less salty the lake's. the lecturer refutes this point. She claims this solution requires a lot of money that the government can't provide. She explain her idea by mentioning the long distance between the ocean and the lake. this operation will require the construction of long piping line that can cost a fortune.
Laslty, the reading claims that building walls to divide the lake into several section with different size and salinity can be a great solution. the small section will have the high salinity leaving the largest section with a small salinity to maintain life. the lecturer refuses this idea. She states that the lake is located in an active geological area, when earthquakes occur usually. She then adds by saying that the walls would not resist and they will collapse easily.
all things considered, the reading provides a variety of solutions to decrease the salinity of the Californian lake. Nevertheless, the lecturer states some challenging ideas.
- Some people think that they can learn better bu themselves than with a teacher. Others think that it is always better to have a teacher. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons to develop your essay 73
- For the successful development of a country, it is more important for a government to spend money on the education of very young children (five to ten years old) than to spend money on universities. 76
- Some parents offer their school-age children money for each high grade (mark) they get in school. Do you think this is a good idea?Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. 65
- creativity is important to success agree or not 42
- Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Television has destroyed communication among friends and family. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. 90
