In schools, most courses finish with a final exam to assess a students ability. However, some people do not do well in exams. Therefore academic success should not be measured by exam performance but by an overall grade based on the whole period of study.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.
Write at least 250 words.
The education system, in today’s world, has adopted rigorous selection criterias in order to judge a student’s academic intelligence. These constitute mostly the final test which are conducted towards the end of a particular course. Although, there are other assessments that follow the final one, it is the latter that usually determines the level of success achieved by any student. In my opinion, it should be aggregation of all exams that should be considered before grading any marks to the students. These are due o a number of reasons that would be discussed throughout the essay.
Firstly, considering the whole period of study time for the final grading gives a student the opportunity for consistent performance. For example, it can happen so that, a meritorious guy have done exceptionally well in intermediate exams but could not do the same in the final one due to illness. This could lead to poor scoresheet if only the last test is considered. Also, this might be de-motivating for the student himself, who otherwise would have scored better if all the tests were taken into calculation.
Secondly, overall grading keeps student focussed into studying as well as brings them to a continual process of gaining knowledge. Many people would agree that assessment provides some sort of fear motivation that propels a student to complete assigned activities as part of the syllabus of exam. This, in turn would metamorphose them into a disciplined studying pattern rather than preparing hard just before the final exam in order to do well in the same.
In conclusion, we can say that traditional approach to grading needs to be altered to cater better for a student’s academics. This would be achieved through a formal and regulated way of assessment throughout the course.
