TPO-50 - Integrated Writing Task: Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth
The reading passage suggests that sending humans to Mars would cause a series of problem. However, the professor discords with it. She says that those issues can be solved by adapting the solution proposed by scientists.
For a start, the reading states that a trip to Mars and back probably will take more than two years, which is difficult for humans to store necessities such as food and water. However, the professor states that it can be solved by using hydroponic methods. This method grows vegetables in water and does not need large space. Also, using this method is economical and can recycle used water and then transform it into clean water. Besides, it helps recycle carbon dioxide in the air and creates fresh air from astronauts.
Secondly, the article claims that staying in a zero-gravity environment for a long time has a serious impact on the human body. It can decrease muscle mass and lower bone density. Nevertheless, the professor refutes this idea by explaining astronauts know how to manage their health by using some techniques. She stresses that the past experiences on space travel and space station enable astronauts to learn some methods to protect their body. For example, to maintain their bone density, the astronauts would take some minerals or vitamins.
Last but not least, the article posits that astronauts on a mission to Mars would face dangerous levels of space radiation. But the professor says that this is not a huge problem. She says that the level of space radiation is not always dangerous. Dangerous solar radiation comes out occasionally. The spaceship, without the protection from Earth's magnetic field, can be equipped with a special instrument to sense the level of solar radiation and a small space with a shield. Once it reaches a serious level, the instrument can warn the astronauts. Then they will move to the area which contains a shield.
To sum up, based on the reasons mentioned above, it can be clearly seen that the problems presented in the reading passage are not a big deal. The professor claims that although a trip to Mars seems challenging, its problem can be solved by scientists.
