The lecturer disputes the author's suggested claims about the causes of mass extinction at the end of the Triassic period . She provides three concrete reasons to cast doubt about the authors claims.
First, according to the lecturer a massive amount of creature died because of the fluctuated decline in sea water levels. However, the lecturer find this idea debatable. She points out that such a decline in water level would not cause this massive extinction because it was not sudden. Theoretically speaking, a gradual decrease in water level is unlikely to cause such a massive extinction.
Second, the lecturer contradicts the fallacy of the passage volcano eruption in the Triassic period may have cause a massive extinction because of the decrease in atmospheric temperatures. She contends that the release sulfur dioxide was only temporary. Soon, this molecule was cleared from the air and the temperature went back to it's normal level.
Finally, the author argues that an asteroid collision with earth may have cause this massive extinction. However, the lecturer refutes these claims by stating that that scientist did not discover any crater on the surface of the earth. The only crater found was 12 million years before this event. thus this is not a valid explanation.
