What is the purpose of the carved stone?
What has been discussed is the possible purpose of the ancient carved stone balls found in Scotland. The reading passage provides three theories to approach it. Although these theories seem strong and plausible, the lecture speaker counters them respectively.
One purpose of the stone proposed by the reading passage is they were used as weapons for hunting or fighting. Countering this proposal, the lecturer points out that if the stones were weapons there must be some damage on them. However, these stone are so well preserve that there are almost no cracks or flaws on them, therefore, these stones are unlikely to be used as weapons.
Another theory provided by the reading passage is that the stones were used as an unit of weight. This theory, nonetheless, fails to convince the lecture speaker. The lecturer argues that although the sizes of the stones are uniform, their materials are not. Due to the different materials of the stones, the weight of the stones are different to each other. As a result, they could not be used as measuring tools.
Lastly, the theory that the carved stone balls were used as a social mark is also unlikely to be true. The lecturer indicates that these stone were not always decorated elaborately. Also, ancient people usually bury their deads with their belongings. However, none of these stones were found in tombs or graves. That is to say, this theory is also faulty.
