The best way for a society to prepare its young people for leadership in government, industry, or other fields is by instilling in them a sense of cooperation, not competition.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
Today's youngsters are the future of the society. They are the people who will lead, inspire and shape the destiny of their society in coming times and so it becomes absolutely important to prepare them for the challenges. The most important role here is of the society itself. How well they prepare them to take on the responsibilities and lead successfully. Leadership in any field, be it government, industry, sports, or literature etc , is vital for the field itself and society at large. They all contribute to the overall health of the society. And so the people leading should have a sense of co-operation. However instilling a sense of co-operation is not enough. In fact having any single attribute is not enough.
Society in one way or the other, both micro and macro level, contributes in shaping the youngsters value system, their thought process and rationale between doing right and wrong. Co-operation is one of the many attributes that makes them a good human being. But leadership needs much more than just co-operation. On the other hand instilling a sense of competition is also important but again it is not enough for leading. There are many examples where co-operation and competition co-exists. For example, in a cricket team, every player in team is trying to compete against one another to confirm a position in the team at the same time they co-operate with each other to defeat their opponent. Similarly in every field, competition and cooperation go hand in hand.
Furthermore, if let’s say sense of competition is important and is sole attribute for the success in any field, then how will a nation survive if it keeps on competing with every other nation? What about its foreign investments, imports and export businesses, security? Can all these exist without cooperation? No, competition is good until it is not harmful. Competing in inventing new technology, competing at Olympics, competing to be the first one in a medicinal break through is all good. On the other hand cooperation is important when we need to fight an epidemic, when we need to eradicate corruption, or when we need to protect world's environment.
However leadership is just not a job rather it is much bigger responsibility than we expect. And so our young generation needs a lot more than just having a sense of cooperation or competition. It would be wrong to say that these attributes will suffice, in fact leadership demands sense of accountability, rational thinking, unbiased approach to solve problems, sense of obligation towards society and its people, empathy, commitment, selfless devotion and many more.
Our young generation has so much to do for themselves and the society, and having a sense of either cooperation or competition is no way going to help them become a good leader. Leadership needs a much broader outlook.
