The reading and the lecture both discuss franchise and new business owners. While the reading claims that franchise has many advantages over owning a business, the lecturer refutes this and states that the disadvantages of franchise outweigh its advantages.
first of all, the reading claims that franchise contracts specify which supplies to be used. Therefore, the risk of choosing the wrong material which might be costly is diminished. However, the lecture challenges this claim saying that contracts force franchise company to buy overpriced materials and supplies. According to the professor, franchise owners are not allowed to purchase supplies and raw materials which are not specified in the contract even though they are equivalent materials and on the top of that low- priced.
In addition, the reading asserts that franchise saves a new establishing business a huge amount of money. For the reason, that franchise sells an already popular brand and get the benefit of expensive advertising paid by the parent company. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubt on this advantage saying that franchise pays 6 percent of the sum of total sales on an advertisement which is very expensive. Furthermore, the professor explains that parent company spend money to advertise the whole brand and the company in general and not to specify a particular franchise. Consequently, the franchise will have very little benefits, not even half to what independent business makes.
Moreover, the reading contends that the franchise provides secure business and lower failure rate especially in the first few years, unlike nonfranchise business. The lecturer argues by pointing studies show that independent business owners have more chance to be successful within the first two or three years compared to the franchise.
