Tpo 28- integrated writing

The reading and lecture are both about Robert Peary’s reaching to North Pole. The author of the reading feels that Peary reached the Pole and provide three arguments. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that he did not actually reach the North Pole.
To begin with, the author argues that the National Geographic Society conducted a thorough investigation of Peary’s records and equipment. In the article, it is said that the committee concluded that Peary’s accounts were consistent and persuasive and declared that he had indeed reached the North Pole. This specific argument is challenged by lecturer. She claims that conducting was not completely objective. Committee members were close friends, and they contributed large money to this research. Additionally, she says that it investigation lasted two days, so it was biased and not trustworthy.
Secondly, the author suggests that a recent expedition provides support for Peary’s claim that he reached the North Pole in only 37 days after setting out from Ellesmere Island off the coast of Greenland. The article mentions that Tom Avery recently made the same trek in less than 37 days by using the same kind of dogsled, the same number, and breed of dogs as Peary had. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning it is unfair to compare between Avery and Peary. The food for Avery is supplied by an airplane rather than a dogsled. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that there are highly favorable air conditions for Avery, but Peary faced frigid air conditions.

Finally, the author posits that here are photographs taken by Peary which support his claim to have reached the North Pole. Moreover, it is stated in the article that the Sun's position established from the photographs corresponds exactly to the Sun's position as it should have been at the North Pole on that day. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that photographs do not prove this claim. The technique scientists used depend on measuring shadow precisely, but we could not establish Sun’s position by this technique. Additionally, she says that camera which photographs used was very primitive, so photos look blured.
