The figure gives information about how sugar that we consume daily is prepared from sugarcane in the field. It requires eleven steps under three stages, starting with the collection of sugarcane from the fields and ends with loading of the dry sugar to the sugar hoppers load trucks which carry the dry sugar to the warehouse for storage.
To begin with, the sugarcane is collected from the fields into the mash bin in which the cane is cut into small bits. The bits of cane are then weighed and emptied into a cane carrier, where the cane gets shred and juice is extracted out of the shredded cane. In the second stage, the extracted juice is analysed for sucrose content and the juice is heated and lime is added to reduce the acidity. The mud particles in the juice are removed by passing the juice through a clarifier so that the mud gets settled at the bottom and hence removed through an opening at the bottom. At the end of the second stage, the juice is sent into a steamer with five chambers, where the water gets evaporated and the juice forms into a syrup.
In the final stage, the syrup is loaded in a vaccum pan to form sugar crystals and then the sugar is spun to separate it from molasses that is used as a stock feed for alcohol production. The wet sugar is then transferred to a cooler for cooling and drying and the resultant dry sugar is loaded on to the sugar hoppers in the truck for transport to the warehouse for further storage.
