In the reading, the writer suggests that one kind device helping trees to grow will not be successful in fighting against desertification for some reasons. However, the professor regards those reasons as unconvincing,
First, the author claims that cost of the device is expensive and some countries suffered from desertification cannot afford it. Yet, the speaker denies that this cost can be reasonable because the device can be reused for more than 20 times. When one tree grows up from young to big with the help of the device, people can move the device and use it to grow other trees.
Moreover, as mentioned in the passage, because trees cannot serve as a kind food source for people living in those areas, it’s hard to motivate them to look after this devices, which is important in the whole process. But the professor refutes that people would like to help install and maintain the devices because there are some benefits. First, devices can collect water for other plants and then people will harvest more food, such as vegetables. Second, branches of trees can be good firewood.
At last, the reading suggests that the ability to collect and conserve water is limited. However, the lecturer rejects it is true that the device can help trees grown better. By using this device, young trees will grow longer roots which can reach water under soil. And there are 90 percent trees are still thriving 2 years after the devices had been removed.
