comics
The reading and the listening are both about the “comic medium”, which is one the most popular art forms in America. The author of the reading believes that there are three possible explanations to support this idea. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. These are the opinions that none of these explanations are correct.
To begin with, the author suggests that the first comic was created in America. It is mentioned that Hogan Alley’s was the first popular character. This argument is challenge by the lecturer. He mentioned that there were other popular characters in Europe, which were created before. Furthermore, he argued that the creator of Hogan Alley’s was not totally American, but an immigrant who came to The United States.
On the second point, the text contends that the first popular action comic was created in America in 1938. The article notes that “Superman” was the first superhero in the world. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that there was another character created years before. The professor elaborates on this by mentioning that “The adventures of Tin Tin” was released sixteen years before, and outperformed in popularity to “Superman”. Also, he mentioned that the creator of “Superman” was Canadian.
Finally, it is stated in the article that the Americans exported these art forms to the whole world. The author established that, both Japanese comics and European comics had American influences. The lecturer, on the other hand, postulate that traditional Asian art was one of the biggest influences, and Europe comics had a unique style. He puts forth the idea that the “comic medium” is not uniquely American art, but belongs to the whole world.
