In this set of materials, the reading passage states several hypothesizes would be an effect on occurring little ice age about 1350 until 1900CE. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading by providing different reasons (and examples).

First and foremost, the reading points out that before little ice age, some glaciers were melted, and sent a lot of cold freshwater to the Gulf stream that disrupting it, so increasing earth temperature. In contrast, the lecture opposes this view by mentioning that the Gulf Stream could just affect the climate of Europe and North America. But, the little ice age occurred in southern hemispheres such as New Zealand and Africa that the Gulf Stream could not affect on. So, the Gulf Stream disruption is not a good reason for little ice age occurrence.

Furthermore, the reading argues that volcanic eruption sends a lot of dust into the atmosphere, and it would block sunlight from reaching the earth, so it could reduce Earth's temperature. Conversely, what the professor state is different. He indicates that if volcano eruption sends a lot of dust to earth to making dark clouds, local people may have seen unusual effects such as colorful sunset or brown snow. But, local people did not report these effects, and everything would be routine at that time. Hence, volcano eruption would not be explained little ice age.

Finally, according to the reading, decreasing human population and increasing number of trees would absorb CO2 from the atmosphere which decreasing greenhouse effects that keep Earth warm. However, the lecturer believes that decreasing the human population did not take enough time for growing forest. The human population quickly come back to previous situations. And, they started to cut down trees for making the field, and cultivated crops for preparing food. Thus, there was not enough time for the forests to have any effect on the climate and cause the little ice age.
